The last three weekends have been very busy with the 2016 WBC Club Championships running across four days. This year saw us expand our Novice Championships further, incorporating all of the swimmers in the Benson and Smith squads. These swimmers were lucky enough to get demonstrations from Performance Squad swimmers George Clough, Calum Reid, Mhairi Swanson and Roisin Ramsay. They also had a very special guest, Scott Quin, come to present medals and show off his very own silver medal from the Paralympics! It was fantastic to see the swimmers enjoying themselves and racing up to nine races across the afternoon! Some were racing for the very first time and everyone did a fantastic job.
The senior Championships took place at Glenrothes and then Ainslie Park and we had some outstanding early season swims right across the Club. A number of records were broken throughout the Championships and an updated listed of records will soon be published on the website, along with the overall champions for each age group. We managed to get through almost all of the medal presentations at Ainslie Park, with thanks to life members Grant Cook, Ian Wright, Lewis Smith and Gillian Hepburn for coming along to hand out medals. The remainder of the medals will be distributed in training over the next few weeks.
Our main weekend of racing was an accredited Level 2 meet, and I must thank all of our officials for giving their time to make sure we had enough numbers to make this work. Swimmers will now be able to use these times for entry into district and national meets. We hope that in 2017 we will be able to get the entire championships licensed and accredited.
With 250 swimmers taking part, the Championships are a big event which would not happen without the help and support of our volunteers. A huge thanks must go to everyone who helped to ensure the event ran successfully once again!
Please note that the trophies for the top three places in each age group will be handed out at our Annual Awards Night which will take place at Edinburgh Academy on Saturday the 3rd December. We are following the Awards with a Club Disco, so please mark the date in your diary!
